My colleague happened to visit Hanoi during the mooncake festival and she brought back a box of traditional Vietnamese mooncakes (consisting of 2 baked and 2 snowskin mooncakes) for us to try. The mooncakes were bought from a very popular shop in Hanoi and apparently according to the locals in Vietnam, you will have to queue for quite sometime to get your hands on a box of mooncakes.
Vietnamese mooncakes are very different from the traditional lotus-paste-fillings mooncakes we have in Singapore. Vietnamese mooncakes are more savory and the fillings consist of toasted nuts, citron, ginger, mung beans, lotus seed etc. It's an acquired taste and I have to admit it was pretty much a cultural shock for most of us. Though we still prefer our local traditional mooncakes as most of us have a sweet tooth, it was definitely an interesting experience and a great "eye opener" for all of us.
Happy Mooncake Festival to All! ^_^
